Max Vermeij is an erudite and versatile criminal law specialist with over twenty years’ experience. His career started in 1999 in Amsterdam as a tax lawyer when he joined Stibbe, one of the most prestigious law firms in the country. This experience has enabled Max to excel, as a criminal law specialist, in complicated fraud cases where a fiscal element is almost invariably discernable. The ability to quickly get to the heart of the matter is a quality that Max will use to his clients’ advantage in “regular” criminal cases, too. His defence is top-notch.
Over the years – triggered by the “cartoon controversy” of 2005/2006 and Max’ succesful defence of the Dutch cartoonist “Gregorius Nekschot” – Max has specialised in criminal cases where the freedom of expression is at stake. Whether one is accused of group defamation, “hate speech”, discrimination or “seditious” utterances, Max will defend your right (as George Orwell formulated it) “to tell people what they do not want to hear”. He will also protect your right to freedom of assembly by requesting, if needs be, a preliminary injunction in case the authorities decide to limit or forbid your protest meeting.
Max belongs to the select handful of criminal law specialists recommended (by the National Police) to police officers who themselves have become a suspect in a criminal investigation. He also defends police officers against whom disciplinary inquiries have been instigated.
Defending your case before the Supreme Court (“Hoge Raad”) or before the European Court of Human Rights are two other specialist fields in which Max operates. His exceptional foreign language skills enable Max, who is fluent in English, French and German, to communicate with, and litigate on behalf of, clients from all over the world. His Polish language skills are currently at A2 level.
Max also holds a MSc degree in Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology. As a result, he has developed a sensitivity to other cultures and points of view and will never lose sight of the human dimension in a criminal case.
In 2014, Max was one of the criminal law specialists who co-founded Summit’s predecessor Noorduyn Vermeij Van Straalen Advocaten. He is a member of the Dutch Association of Tax Lawyers (NVAB), the Dutch Association of Criminal Defence Lawyers (NVSA), the Association of Cassation Lawyers in Criminal Cases (VCAS) and the European Criminal Bar Association (the ECBA).
In the Register of Legal Practice Areas of the Dutch Bar Association Max is registered as a criminal law specialist (including general criminal law, financial economic criminal law, penal tax law, international criminal law and environmental criminal law), as a cassation specialist (criminal law) and as a specialist in administrative law including enforcement law. This registration obliges him to obtain ten training credits each calendar year in each of the registered main areas of law, in accordance with the standards of the Dutch Bar Association.
